THE AWSOME Some 545 years ago, prince Vlad the Impaler-Dracula escaped from his besieged fortress of Poienari and crossed the high Carpathians into Transylvania (helped by the shepherds of a village called Aref) Follow into the footsteps of this unlikely escape, climb to the peak of Mount Fagaras - the highest in the Carpathians, picking berries, fishing trout and roasting your bacon over fire, just like Vlad did. There will be daily stretches of several hours of walking each, with the van following you obediently. Overnight in one of the many chalets on the route. At 2000 m. you will cross into Transylvania through a tunnel cut right under the peak. On the other side, behold the lake of the Scholomancers (rain-makers), then descend to a chain of fortresses, castles and walled towns. P.S. your walking tour will be led by a villager of Aref, as of old. P.P.S. We need minimum 4 of you, to make it worthwhile (lesser numbers will cost more). * Thursday: transfer from the airport to the village of Aref (overnight in private farm houses: bathroom, TV) * Friday: optional climb to the ruins of fortress Poienari (1456 steps). Drive along the shore of lake Vidraru, then start walking to the heights of the Carpathians. Overnight on the Transylvanian side, at 2000 m. altitude * Saturday: descend into Transylvania (walking) Visit mediaeval Brasov. Overnight in the royal mountain resort of Sinaia (4 or 3 star hotel) * Sunday: departure to the airport (2 hours).
